I John 2:12-14 says,
I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you for His name’s sake. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. (NAS)
- Little children are new to the faith: Unskilled in the word of righteousness and unable to digest solid food of the Word.
- Children are toddlers in the faith: Able to digest solid food of the word to know how to grow on their own.
- Young men: Strong in the word of God that abides with them and they overcome the wicked one.
- Fathers in the sense of maturity: Known the Father from the beginning.
Notice that the prerequisite for spiritual growth rests in the knowledge, understanding and wisdom of the scripture. It is not a physical age. The stages of growth for feeding the lambs like Jesus told Peter is from little children to children in the spirit. They should know how to let the spirit guide them and for the anointed one to teach them all things. They should know how to hear the shepherds voice to follow God.
