What does it mean to “renew my mind”?
We need to know what it means to know how to renew your mind. The English word “renew” comes from the Greek word “ananeóō”. Ananeoo is two words in the Greek “Ana” which means upwards completing a process and “neo” which is new in time.
Renewing your mind means to raise up your spiritual comprehension to new level continuously new in time to a sanctified reasoning. Sanctification is a spiritual comprehension not a physical aspect of perfecting flesh. The flesh is crucified with Christ. Renewing your mind is the way to grow to spiritual maturity.
How to renew your mind?
The first thing is you must be born of the spirit before you can learn how to renew your mind according to the spirit. When we are spiritually regenerate into Christ we are literal children of God in God the Son. We were baptized into the Body of Jesus and our old nature was crucified with Christ on His crucifixion. We are raised with Christ in the likeness of His resurrection in the newness of life.
Old nature passed away and we become partakers of His divine nature. This is the circumcision of spirit is God cutting away of the old nature. Our identity changed from children of wrath and sons of disobedience to children of light. Our father changed from the devil to God the Father. We are baptized into the Body of Jesus, new spirit, new heart and the mind of Christ Jesus.
Our image changed from the image of Adam to the image of Jesus. We are changed into the image of the Son from glory to glory. We receive the glorious gospel and changed into the image of the Son.
We will be changed into the image of the Son in Glorification of the Body. We receive the Holy Spirit as a down payment to ensure that God glorify us. God will finish the work that He started from salvation to glorification.
4 foundation for how to renew your mind?
You must have the correct premise or you cannot renew your mind spiritually. You must have the right belief system or you cannot come to the truth, abide in the truth or hold fast your confession of faith firm until the end of your life.
1.) We have authority in Jesus name over wickedness
Christ is given us authority to be His witnesses, authority over evil spirits and to cast down strongholds with vain imaginations. We are victorious in Christ. Christ overcame the world, flesh and the devil. We are not to fight for the victory, but we are to fight from the victory of Christ.
2.) We walk in the spirit being in spiritual places in Jesus as a spiritual race
When you come to Christ through faith you are a doer of the Word of God. When you are in Christ, then you walk in the spirit.
If Christ be in you, then you are in the spirit. If Christ is not in you, then you are in the flesh. Sowing to the flesh or the spirit in context is talking about sowing to the spirit by believing reaps to everlasting life and sowing to the flesh in unbelief reaps to everlasting punishment.
We fulfill the Law by believing in Christ. When we believe in Christ we have no other God beside God, no idols, no saying His name in vain and we worship God alone. We are not commit adultery in this case idolatry looking to another God.
We are not liars because He that believes that Jesus is the Christ is not a liar. We are not fornicators because we are married to Christ. We honor the Father by honoring the Son.
We are not thieves because we go through Christ to be part of the fold not climbing the fence like a robber. We receive our satisfaction in Christ and need not to covet someone else. The Law is not for a righteous man but for the Lawbreaker. We are righteous in Christ.
The Law in the natural is for the lawbreaker. The Law is spiritual as it relates to Christ that fulfilled every jot and tittle. The Law was meant to show us the savior that would be without spot or wrinkle.
It is a school master to point us to Christ. Christ is the end of the Law for those that believe. We are perfected in Christ and Christ fulfilled the Law for us.
We are under grace not the Law. We fulfill the Law in Christ. Christ through perfect obedience makes those righteous that believe.
3.) As a spiritual race in Jesus we are perfect as partakers of His nature
Galatians says that we begun to be perfect when we believe in Christ. We begin perfection through Christ and need not to continue it through works of the flesh. This is called accursed and to fall from grace by looking to anything other than the cross of Christ for perfection. We are perfected by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ that crucified the Eternal Spirit for us to perfect us by believing. As Christ was in this world so are we now in Christ. We must guard ourselves from sin to not erode our faith to unbelief.
4.) We are to see things from the eternal worldview
Our world view needs to change from Earthly to Heavenly. We must change our perspective from an limited perspective to an eternal perspective. 2 Corinthians 4:18 says that while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal. We are to walk in faith not through sight.
Why do we need to renew our minds?
1.) Our minds are full of darkness and is futile
Ephesians 4: 17-19 says, This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
2.) We are corrupt with lust
Ephesians 4:22 says, That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.
3.) We walked according to the course of this world system under the prince of this world Satan
Ephesians 2:2-3 says, Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
What are the problems with not renewing our mind?
We can erode our faith to the point of unbelief by not renewing our mind. Hebrews 3 :12-19 says to take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end: While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
Here is what not renewing your mind looks like. It starts with being sluggish to hear the spirit of God. The evidence is lack of knowledge of the Word of God. The result is the inability to exercise your senses spiritually. You will not know what is good or bad theology.
Hebrews 5:11-14 says that of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
The other problem is the war waging for our soul in the mind. We have only one nature the new nature of God in us. The old nature was cut away through circumcision of God.
3 examples of encouragement to continue to renew our minds
We need to renew our minds to grow in the faith. We must have vision of the reward of the future with faith and patience. Hebrews 11:13, 16 says that these all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
We must seek to bear the reproach over the joy of pleasure of this world. Hebrews 11: 26-27 says that esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
Hebrews 6:11-12 says that we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
6 steps to renew our mind?
1.) We are not to be conformed to this world and we are to be transformed by renewing our mind. We will be able to know what is the good and perfect will of God. We were under the elements of the world and are now crucified to the world.
Since our nature has changed our desires change. We no longer try not to sin because the Law of God says not to sin. Instead we are not sinning as a result of our nature change that makes us hate sin. We view sin a bondage that we are free from and we choose to be a slave of righteousness. We are to mortify the deeds of the flesh.
They were crucified. All things are lawful for us now that we are in Christ, but not all things are expedient. This means that we are free to do what we want in Christ, but a life of sin is not beneficial to us even though we are free from sin in Christ. Therefore, we limit our liberty knowing the dangers of the deceitfulness of sin to erode faith to the point of unbelief or offense of a weaker believer.
Romans says should we sin that grace would abound. We are free from sin. Why would you want to live in it any longer? Does this mean that we should be condemned if we fall. No. There is no condemnation for those in Christ. If we sin. Jesus is our advocate that pleads our case before the throne of grace saying I paid for that sin. Keep the faith, God is for you and nothing can stand against you.
2.) Our nature is changed now we are to change our thinking to reflect the new nature. We must renew our mind according to the inner man in Christ. We have this treasure in an earthen vessel that the excellency is of Jesus and not of ourselves. Though our outer man is perishing. Our inner man is being renewed. We are to renew our mind each day with the knowledge of the Lord. The context is talking about carrying the dying of the Lord in our bodies for the sake of that life reaching someone else with us ministering this knowledge.
3.) 2 Corinthians 5:16 says that wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. We are the righteousness of God in Christ old things passed away and all things become new. We are a new creation in Christ.
God is saying that we are to nurture the Spirit now that the flesh is crucified. What does the Bible say produces faith? Romans 10 says that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. John 15 says that we must abide in Christ the vine to produce fruit and apart from Jesus we cannot produce fruit.
How do we abide in Christ? John 15 says by abiding in the Word of God. Abiding in truth. Jesus is the truth. We nurture the faith with the Word of God not with psychology. Psychology is for the flesh that is crucified. We are not to resurrect the flesh with teaching for the flesh. This is accursed.
4.) We use to in our old nature prior to Christ were under the element of this world. We were spiritually regenerate into Christ in the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy in the holy ghost.
Ephesians 4:20-24 says that who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
5.) We crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. We are to allow God to manifest through us the fruits of God. Galatians 5:22-24 says that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
6.) Colossians 3:1-4 says that If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. We are to sing songs to the Lord and what we perform in word or in action we are to perform it unto the Lord to glorify God.
Keep your mind on God
Isaiah 26:3 says, You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.
How to renew your mind in Christ?
Here are a few things that we must carefully consider in renewing our mind. We are given the mind of Christ. Here is what we are to model. Christ is our model.
Philippians 2:1-11 says Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of other. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Christ being God took on the nature of creation to humiliation for us.
Revelation 5 says that Christ is not revealed as a ruling king. Christ comes out as a lamb that is worthy to take the scroll. This is in Heaven. There are wolves in sheep clothing that build their church building kingdoms that want glory when our savior is a lamb in Heaven to take the scroll not as a king. These are false workers that masquerade as children of light that serve their father the god of this world system. Stay away from false workers. Esteem others above yourself and look to serve like Jesus served.
Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is not of this world system. Satan is the god of this world system. We are in the world and are not of this world. Our citizenship is in Heaven now.
Jesus said to render unto Caesar what is Caesar and unto God what is God’s. The Lord was obvious that He served the Father and not Caesar. The writers of the New Testament learned from Jesus. They used the term Ekklesia to send a message to Caesar.
Ekklesia was the term that Caesar used to summon citizens to serve in politics. They used this term Ekklesia to tell Caesar that they have no king but Jesus. Their citizenship is in Heaven not on Earth.
We serve King Jesus. Nero crucified them except for the apostle John. Yet false teachers teach that Romans 13 says that we are to be subject to Government.
It is not saying that Christians are to be subject to Government it is saying that we are subject to the higher power. God is the higher power. The Lord or the writers of the New Testament were not believers in this world system.
They preached the gospel as the power of God unto salvation in Christ to be seated with Christ in Heavenly places until Christ returns. Christ will rule and reign in a New Heaven and New Earth after the 1,000 year millennium. We are spiritual Israel not the natural nation of Israel that is only the Old Testament type.
Those that believe in Jesus are spiritual Israel. A Christian should not vote, because politicians are of this world system kingdom. They cannot bring change that is the Christians responsibility with the gospel of Jesus.
We must believe what the Lord says about who we are in Christ. God says to call those things that are not as though they are in Christ. We still carry around this crucified carcass but we are a new creation. God calls us holy, righteous, Just and perfect. Follow this pattern to renew your mind.
6 strategies to renew your mind form negative thoughts?
1.) Change what you set your mind on. The mind can be set on Heavenly or Earthly Things.
2.) What you pay attention to is what grows and what you are not paying attention to will cease.
3.) Make a choice and stick to it. A person that thinks one way and then another way will not receive anything form the Lord. You make a choice to change your mind and trust God.
4.) Pray for the Lord to strengthen you to change your mind.
5.) Meditate on the Word.
6.) Cast away every vain thought that arises and rebuke it. Associate something spiritual in place of the thought when it comes.
