What is prayer?
It is communication with God. It is critical to note that there is the prayer of faith and the prayer of communion. God is not in communion with unregenerate people outside of Jesus.
Let me communicate clearly: There is only one prayer that God honors for the person that is not born again. It is the prayer for God to open their eyes to the truth of Jesus and for God to save them. This is the prayer of faith for salvation.
I John 1 says that if you have the Son, then you have the Father. You have communion with the Father through the Son and with one another in Jesus. The line of access to fellowship or communication with the Father is through the Son. Therefore, God is in fellowship with Christians not unregenerate people.’
The prayer model
Luke 11:1-13 says,
Pray to the Father
And He said to them, “When you pray, say:
‘Father, hallowed be Your name.
Pray for God’s will
Your kingdom come.
Pray for God to Speak to you through the Scripture
‘Give us each day our daily bread.
Pray for grace for your own life and to release others
‘And forgive us our sins,
For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
Pray for grace to overcome temptation
And lead us not into temptation.’”
Pray with persistence
Then He said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ “I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
Pray for salvation in reference to the unsaved receiving the spirit
“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. “For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. “Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? “Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
Prayer and fasting for certain spirit to come out
Mark 9:25-29 says,
When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again.” After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, “He is dead!” But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and he got up. When He came into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, “Why could we not drive it out?” And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.”
Prerequisite to hear our prayer
John 14:14-15 says,
This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.
We must come to God in the name of Jesus, asking according to the will of God, and with faith that we receive what we ask God.
Pray with faith
James 1:5-8 says,
if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Pray in these ways
Therefore I [a]exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men.
- Supplication– Prayer out of a urgent need.
- Prayer- exchange of prayer that ask with the intention of a response.
- Intercession- Prayer that is in line with the revealed will of God with the guidance of the spirit.
- Thanks- Thanks for the grace of god.
Pray in the Spirit
Romans 8 says,
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
I Corinthians 14 states that the spirit prays through us in other languages that others cannot understand, but edifies that person. This is tongues without understanding. Spirit prays in other languages with an interpretation for others edifying. This tongues of understanding.
How often should we Pray?
Without ceasing. (I Thessalonians 5:17)
What causes our prayers to not get answer?
- Conflict with spouse according to Peter.
- Asking for things that are selfish for your own gain not in God’s will according to James.
- God will not answer for reasons of timing, which is not now not never.
- Sometimes God will not show until you are dead in the grave stinking for three days like Lazarus. You wait for God for your purpose. I have waited for twenty years for things and still waiting.
Prayer of thanks over food
God sanctifies the food through prayer. (I Timothy 4:4-5)
